Candidates - Interim Management

What is interim management?

In business, change is always necessary.  It can provide a business with the opportunity to explore new directions, enter new markets and increase overall market standing.  Most successful businesses are in a constant state of change, and consequently will require assistance to manage this process.

This is where Interim Managers can prove to be invaluable in managing change, crisis or change within a company.

The use of interim managers is growing rapidly and allows an organisation to use the skills of a highly experienced person during a period of change. An interim assignment can vary in length but is unlikely to be less than six months.

Why do businesses use an interim manager?

Interim consultants can usually start within days (rather than the lengthy permanent recruitment process at this level) and will have minimum termination formalities.

They will be able to transfer skills, contacts and experience to an executive team, ensuring their value is felt long after the assignment has ended.

An interim manager will have past experience of the challenges they are about to face, and bring immediate solutions to these challenges.

An interim manager will not be restrained by any long-term internal issues, such as company process and staff relationships, when forming opinions on the services to be delivered.

Interims will take accountability for their work rather than assume a hands off approach common to management consultants.

When to do businesses use an interim manager?

Project/Programme Management – When undertaking a project that needs leadership and proven delivery skills that do not currently exist in the organisation.

Gap Management – When a gap is created by restructure, resignation, promotion or other and an interim manager is an alternative to hiring on a permanent basis, or to manage during the process of recruiting the permanent employee.

Crises Management – When a business is requiring enhanced performance and/or a restructure of management to ensure a rescue of a business.  Alternatively, to manage the closing down of a business area.
